Introduction
Developing the air conditioning pipework for a new jumbo jet is a complex job for which the subsidiary of a well-known European aircraft manufacturer brought in know-how from outside. Air conditioning systems in aircraft are key to keeping passengers comfortable. They have to ensure general ventilation as well as allowing the passengers to control their own environment individually. They also have to deliver constant air humidity and prevent passengers from being disturbed in any way when recirculating the volumes of air needed.
Specialist know-how and years of proven expertise in the supervision of large-scale projects tipped the balance in favor of IndustrieHansa being awarded the contract for this project.
Solution: The first preliminary design provided by the customer served as the basis and under consideration of system requirements, the subsequent processes were developed up to the stage of a detailed design ready for production.
Puncture points
- Ensuring all specification requirements
- Complying with all production specifications in the design
- Harmonizing the air conditioning system's throughflow levels with the installation situation
- Producing and evaluating feasibility studies for new system solutions
- Revising 3D models for the preliminary design as system problems arose
- Individually adapting the air conditioning system in response to special customer requests
- Detailed design of air conditioning system as 3D model
- Producing production drawings and liaising with production
Benefits
The complexity of the air conditioning pipework in this new aircraft model meant that the development team had to be split over two sites: one at the supplier's premises and the other at the aircraft manufacturer's premises. Strict project and interface management ensured efficient linking between the work undertaken by the OEM and tier 1. This was a key element of the project's success as was overcoming design challenges. The new piping system has since been tried and tested in hundreds of hours of flight.
