Introduction
A major automotive manufacturer from southern Germany decided to use CATIA V5 throughout its company and to replace some of its existing CAD tools. In this context existing design methods had to be checked and adapted and the basic data models (start models, master models) used in the individual technical areas (chassis, pedals, exhaust system etc.) aligned with the new system.
Due to the few, changeable control parameters, the new CATIA V5 methods should help the company to quickly reach concept status and once new ergonomics data and reference points from the installation space have been added, it should make possible concepts for more vehicle models. Other requirements covered kinematic studies, analyses of installation space and collisions, a structure prepared for the DMU process and the availability of motion and envelope curves later on in the process.
Because of the company's extensive CATIA V5 expertise, IndustrieHansa was awarded the work of supervising the changeover process and ensuring a successful rollout of the new system.
Solution: In order to ensure smooth use and a high level of acceptance amongst users, the new methods were documented, presented and communicated to the users. The design engineers were also prepared for their work with the new system through training courses and user support, ensuring that a seamless transition could be made to CATIA V5 on the scheduled date for the launch.
