Supply planning for premium compact SUV

Sectors: Automotive
Category: Engineering
Process: Production
Customer: OEM
Introduction
An automotive manufacturer from southern Germany decided to use external resources for the supply planning of a new vehicle derivative because of tight in-house capacities and deadlines.

The customer tasked IndustrieHansa with this work where great importance was attached to qualitative aspects as well as ensuring on-time and smooth integration in the existing series process in time for the start of production.

Solution: Development of low-cost, value flow-focused and holistic material supply concepts within a short time window.

Puncture points
  • Logistical planning responsibility for the areas of relevance to the concept
  • Development of material supply strategies (Just-in-sequence / JIS, Just-in-time / JIT, direct delivery, in-house sequencing / consignment, Warehouse-on-Wheels, storage processes)
  • Concept design and evaluation of alternative concepts for material flow and provision as well as definition of structural requirements for integrating the new derivative into the existing series process
  • Consideration of the economic viability and value flow of supply processes (comparisons of alternatives, synergy effects)
  • Coordination with the technical departments involved (material control, material flow planning, supply planning, assembly process planning, supplier, etc.)
  • Supervision of standard supply processes for areas not of relevance to the concept

Benefits
Despite the tight timetable of just six months, all areas of relevance to the concept were handed over on time and with the agreement of all the interface partners. The supply concepts ensured a low-cost, holistically optimized logistics approach, integrated in existing series processes. New kinds of material supply strategies were also implemented in this factory for the first time. These include Warehouse-on-Wheels and "Part-in-Part" concepts which represent what is almost a container-free delivery strategy.
