Weight forecast for Flying Wing

Sectors: Aviation
Category: Engineering
Process: Development
Introduction
One of the central remits which a major European aircraft manufacturer is requiring of its Future Project Office is to prepare for the future of flying today and to develop and assess the concepts of future aircraft. The office is relying on external expert knowledge to supplement its own resources.

The fuselage structure and cabin compartment are the areas to which experts from the IndustrieHansa Future Projects team have been assigned as they have wealth of experience in these lines of work.

Solution: Evaluation of new and unconventional structure designs, system architectures, production procedures and material technologies on cabin utilization and market acceptance and strategic concentration of this know-how in a development partnership focused on long-term work.

Puncture points
  • Concept design for fuselage structure
  • Optimization of structure
  • Concept design for cabin compartment
  • Study into alternative materials
  • Finite element methods for designing material
  • Parameter variation and sizing
  • Weight breakup of main components
  • Weight calculation
  • Comparison of concepts

Benefits
The project resulted in the customer's admin and coordination work being reduced significantly. The team of IndustrieHansa experts also managed to successfully realize requirements relating to the effects of technical and economic assessment parameters on overall weight. This was thanks to the way in which the different parts of the project were handled by different disciplines. All the quality gates were met and potential for optimizing the concept was substantiated by results from analytical methods, tools and additional technical expertise.
